A large-scale search and recovery mission is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost boats transporting aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Launched

The Mexican government has sent naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of 9 personnel, as stated by a navy statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Background of Relief to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the nation endures widespread national electricity failures.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and each boat are outfitted with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort commented.

The nine-person crew are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Previous Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro returned to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, bicycles and provisions.

Larger International Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the country came into effect.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 operations cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Political pressure have increased over the past months, with statements from various leaders underscoring the complicated nature of bilateral relations.

Responding to certain comments, a prominent government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its command to discover the vessels and ensure the safety of the people on board.

As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
