A high-ranking Russian general has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to official statements.

The event occurred on Monday morning when an bomb placed beneath a vehicle was set off, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

The committee stated that one theory under investigation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Location of the Incident

Personnel have been dispatched to the location, which is said to be in a south district of the capital.

Media coverage suggest the blast happened in a car park near a residential building.

History of Incidents

Since the onset of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military officials have been attacked within Moscow.

This new event echoes other serious incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a explosive concealed on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a source from Ukraine earlier attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

The conflict has increasingly seen shadowy operations extending into the heart of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death continues to be ongoing.
