The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster final round of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from around eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff win against the same opponent.
Rai entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final green.
This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
