During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
