A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that the UK failed to secure sensitive equipment permitting Afghanistan's rulers to identify Afghans that had served with western forces.
The whistleblower, identified as Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were instructed to move homes and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from militant forces.
Members of Parliament are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a massive disclosure of confidential data involving nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied to come to the UK to flee the Taliban.
A data file containing their personal data, including identities, contact details and in some cases household data, was accidentally leaked by a staff member working at British military command in last year.
The breach came to light only in August 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had sought to settle in the UK surfaced on Facebook.
Many believe there's this misconception that militant forces are without similar capabilities that allied forces use,” she told lawmakers.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can locate your precise location. That is what specialized teams accomplished.”
When questioned about if militant forces had access to advanced decryption, the source declared: “They've got everything.”
Initial findings provided to the investigation suggested that approximately fifty relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been murdered.
A superinjunction concerning the incident was enacted in August 2023 and blocked any information regarding the matter from public disclosure until mid-2025.
Because she was restricted, Person A and the volunteer organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been breached”.
“We recommended that they relocate if they could and switched their mobile numbers. Those were the crucial data that, should militant forces obtained such data, would result in their location being found,” Person A explained.
Person A disputed that internal investigation carried out by a former official had been mistaken to state that the possession of the records by militant forces was “not significantly alter present danger”.
“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”
The source explained disturbing abuse endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to try to get relatives to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
