Ayoub El Kaabi's Spectacular Finish Wraps Up Morocco's Triumph Against Comoros in Afcon Opening Match.

The Morocco overcame a jittery beginning to beat Comoros in the competition's first match on the weekend, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and substitute El Kaabi in the latter period.

It was a hardly emphatic showing, however, from the heavily tipped Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the tiny Indian Ocean nation in the world rankings and had to work tirelessly for the points in wet conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Nervy Beginning and Missed Chances

The hosts failed to convert an first-half spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at half-time despite dominating the ball, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

It arrived after Noussair Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before slipping it across for Brahim Díaz to sidefoot home.

“The opening game is invariably tough but we came good in the second half,” commented Morocco coach Regragui.

The Substitute's Moment of Brilliance

The tension was subsequently calmed by a moment of sheer genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes after his introduction, the forward met a ball into the box with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and ensuring the result.

Earlier in the match, the hosts could have been the lead in the 11th minute after a penalty was given for a challenge on Brahim Díaz. Yet, Rahimi's penalty was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.

Comoros Defiant Stand and Late Opportunity

Comoros stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods until the hosts' superior firepower in the end told.

Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor made several further fine saves to limit the score as the game progressed, although his team did have a chance for an equalizer shortly following Díaz's goal, with Saïd firing directly into keeper Bounou.

Injury Worry for Morocco

The three points was partially marred by an injury to Morocco's captain, Romain Saïss, who was forced off after the first half apparently in some distress.

This defender had only made his comeback to the international setup last month following a lengthy absence due to ankle surgery.

The win continues Morocco's historic run of consecutive wins to nineteen, surpassing the old best of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
