Three police officers perished and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews approached the property near Verona to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and another man who ran away following the explosion was located shortly later. All three have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area revealed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The official thought the blast had happened on a level above the access point and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed reporters, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
