In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract with the power-hitting player.
The contract includes a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16 million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
His deal includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization get a additional payment of any triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to play for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 soon, bolsters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but representing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, breaking the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an side strain. Despite recording 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first, he has more recently played to third.
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind one-run win. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he blasted a equalizing shot in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.
The new White Sox addition is slated to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
