One China's judicial body has sentenced five top members of a well-known Myanmar mafia to capital punishment as Beijing continues its crackdown on fraudulent operations in South East Asia.
Overall, 21 Bai family figures and partners were sentenced of scams, murder, assault and additional offenses, said a official document released on the court portal.
This clan is one of a handful of organized crime groups that rose to power in the last two decades and converted the impoverished isolated region of the town into a profitable base of gambling establishments and entertainment zones.
Recently they turned to scams in which many of smuggled people, many of them from China, are caught, abused and forced to cheat targets in criminal operations worth huge sums.
Syndicate head Bai Suocheng and his heir the younger Bai were included in the several men condemned to execution by the judicial body. Another individual, A third figure and A fourth person were the remaining sentenced.
Two members of the Bai family syndicate were received conditional death penalties. Several were condemned to life imprisonment, while more figures were received jail sentences ranging from a period of 3-20 years.
The Bais, who led their own militia, created 41 bases to accommodate their online fraud schemes and betting establishments, authorities reported.
Such unlawful activities entailed over twenty-nine billion Chinese yuan ($4.1bn; £3.1 billion). They also led to the deaths of six Chinese citizens, the suicide of an individual and several harm, official sources announced.
The strict sentences delivered by the judicial body are within the Chinese initiative to eliminate the extensive fraud networks in Southeast Asia - and issue a stern message to additional unlawful syndicates.
These groups rose to power in the 2000s with the support of Min Aung Hlaing - who currently heads Myanmar's regime. The leader had aimed to prop up partners in Laukkaing after replacing its former leader.

The patriarch, the Bai family's leader, was included in the individuals who were handed to China from the country in recent months.
"Why is the state putting significant resources to pursue the four families?" a official stated in the July film.
"It's to warn other people, no matter your position, your base, when you carry out such serious acts against the nationals, you will pay the price."
