Individuals from across the partisan aisle and the Hollywood world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Police have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial sum.
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
“What a vile and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced previous comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally following the killing of another individual.
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
