Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A recent initialism surfaced a couple of months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials disputes these accusations, just as it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Yet as young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on harmony has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
