A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us locate the video.

We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
