Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.
The economist remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".
Summers, who previously headed the prestigious university, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
The recently released messages demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his choice to step down.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," the organization stated.
This announcement arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on recently to endorse a measure that would require the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will then head to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. The President has said he expects to approve the measure, after changing his view on the subject following pushback from his supporters.
A batch of financier-linked messages disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned several well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The communications revealed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to connect Summers to influential world leaders.
After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, he stated he took "full responsibility for my poor choice to maintain communicating with the financier".
He added that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix relationships with the persons nearest to me".
The economist served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He led the institution from five years and is still a professor there. When stating his departure from public roles recently on this week, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.
Following his declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where he was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was not associated with the organization.
He joined the directorate of the AI company, which creates the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
