Inter striker Lautaro Martínez netted a late brace to secure his side a 2-0 win at Pisa, ensuring the visitors firmly engaged in the Serie A title race despite a somewhat shaky display.
Under Cristian Chivu, Inter now sit third in the table with 27 points total, tied with second-placed Roma and just one point behind leaders Milan. Meanwhile, Pisa occupy the third bottom position with 10 points.
Inter traveled in Tuscany aiming to return to winning ways after suffering a loss to rivals by Milan last weekend, followed by a European loss at Atlético Madrid. Nonetheless, they were forced to fight throughout by newly-promoted Pisa. The home team generated plenty of opportunities, but a clinical Inter scored the opener in the 69th minute when Argentine Martínez drilled a one-time shot into the roof of the net. The attacker then finished from close range seven minutes from time.
Inter’s capacity to convert despite difficult circumstances was decisive in securing three points.
In Spain, Real Sociedad staged a thrilling fightback from 2-0 down to equalize at home against Villarreal, only to succumb to a goal five minutes into added time. The visitors’ goals came from Ayoze Pérez just after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly pulled one back and Ander Barrenetxea leveled the score three minutes from time. However, Moleiro delivered the last word late in stoppage time.
In the late Spanish fixture, Real Madrid travel to Girona requiring a win to go back to the top ahead of Barcelona, who secured a 3-1 triumph over Alavés on Saturday.
