An IT issue at Edinburgh's air traffic control meant no planes could enter or leave the facility.

Flight operations have restarted at Edinburgh Airport following a major technical issue at the control tower brought the international hub to a standstill.

All aircraft movements were stopped because of an systems problem that occurred at about 08:30.

Some passengers found themselves stranded in planes on the runway as the outage continued.

Flights Resume with Ongoing Delays

A statement indicated at 10:40 that flights had resumed, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "understanding and cooperation".

However, considerable delays are likely to affect schedules. Services bound for key destinations like Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, and Bristol have been axed, with many others experiencing delays.

A spokesperson had previously estimated that 27 departures and 11 arrivals could be impacted.

"Travelers are urged to check directly with their airline for the current status on their individual travel plans," officials reiterated.

The airport attributed the full ground stop to an technical fault with its control tower systems vendor.

Passengers should still plan to check the status of their flight before heading to the terminal as backlogs are managed.
